I asked the young people I was working with to come up with an image that would symbolise their experience of creating art in the workshops this week. They decided they wanted to create a doorway!

Willow is an easy to use, malleable material that when weaved and manipulated can create beautiful simple sculptures that participants can take home or in this case display in a public space, for friends and family to see, which they were all very proud of.

The sculptures that this group created were displayed on the walls of their new youth center, it really helped make there mark on what was previously a new, empty space and they could show off their hard work to friends, family, staff and teachers.

The willow wishing tree is a lovely group exercise, creating the tree together and tying wishes, thoughts, hopes for the future to the branches. This can be a strong symbol of hope and help young people realise their dreams and ambitions. Writing down what they wish for, no matter how big or small can a good first step and can help young people feel empowered.

Luna Hoop Workshop

I ran Luna Hoops Interactive street workshops with young people in Blandford Forum as part of the Arts Festival promotion. Here are some of the young people practising the moves they learned during the workshop.

I managed to engage some local boys that would normally have spent their day bored, hanging around town. They joined in with the workshop and commented on how fun hooping was! It is a great activity for building confidence, getting active and improving body confidence, coordination and motor skills are also developed when hooping, but most importantly its great fun!
